OHL Roundup: Trocheck extends point streak to 15 games as Whalers crush Otters

Vincent Trocheck scored twice and added two assists as the Plymouth Whalers defeated the host Erie Otters 7-2 on Friday in Ontario Hockey League play.

The four-point performance extended the 19-year-old's point streak to 15 games. He's produced 18 goals and 16 assists during that stretch. Since being acquired from the Saginaw Spirit on Jan. 10th, Trocheck has recorded at least one point in 21-of-22 appearances with Plymouth and has 45 goals and 97 points in 57 total games, which is good for third in OHL scoring.

Rickard Rakell and Mitchell Heard each had a goal and an assist for the Whalers (36-17-9), who have won 10 of their last 11 outings, while Matthew Mistele and Connor Carrick chipped in with two assists apiece.

Garret Meurs, Tom Wilson and Austin Levi also scored for Plymouth.

Stephen Harper had a goal and an assist for the Otters (17-37-8), who are winless in six games, and rookie Connor McDavid scored the other.

Heading into Friday's match, McDavid was tied with Sarnia Sting forward Nikolay Goldobin for the OHL rookie scoring lead with 58 points in 56 games.

Plymouth's Alex Nedeljkovic only had to make 15 saves for the victory as Erie's Oscar Dansk stopped 30-of-37 shots in defeat.

The Whalers went 1 for 4 on the power play while the Otters failed to score on four chances with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the OHL, it was: Kingston 3, Belleville 1; Guelph 6, Sault Ste. Marie 3; London 4, Sarnia 3 (SO); Barrie 2, Mississauga 0; Kitchener 2, Owen Sound 1 (SO), Oshawa 3, Brampton 2 and Sudbury 6, Peterborough 3.

At Erie, Pa., Harper opened the scoring 2:47 into the first period, however Trocheck evened the score at 12:39 while on the power play.

Meurs and Trocheck then scored 20 seconds apart to give Plymouth a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes of play.

McDavid brought Erie within a goal 39 seconds into the second period, however the Whalers responded with four straight goals.

Rakell, Heard and Levi all scored before the second period was through and Wilson added Plymouth's seventh goal at 8:22 of the third period.

At Kingston, Ont., Mike Morrison stopped 23-of-24 shots and Sam Povorozniouk scored the eventual winner at 19:17 of the second period as the Frontenacs (25-30-5) halted Belleville's (39-15-6) 10-game win streak.

At Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Zac Leslie, Jason Dickinson, Brock McGinn and Zack Mitchell had a goal and an assist each as Guelph (35-20-5) came back from a 3-1 deficit to double up the Greyhounds (33-22-6), who lost in regulation for the first time in seven games.

At London, Ont., Alex Broadhurst scored the shootout winner and Max Domi had a goal and an assist as the Knights (45-12-4) overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period to beat Sarnia (33-25-4) for their sixth win in a row.

At Mississauga, Ont., Mathias Niederberger earned his fourth shutout of the season by making 36 saves and Tyler Fawcett scored the winner in the second period as Barrie (39-19-4) blanked the Steelheads (25-30-5) for its third straight victory.

At Owen Sound, Ont., Radek Faksa and Tobias Rieder scored in the shootout and Jared Gilbert scored his first-career OHL goal in regulation as Kitchener (36-17-8) edged the Attack (38-18-5) for its third win in a row.

At Oshawa, Ont., Tyler Biggs scored the winner with 3:55 to play in regulation and Daniel Altshuller stopped 21 shots for his league-best 33rd victory as the Generals (37-21-4) slipped past Brampton (28-24-9) for their fourth win in as many outings.

At Sudbury, Ont., Mathew Campagna scored two goals and Franky Palazzese stopped 35-of-38 shots as the Wolves (28-23-11) doubled up on Peterborough (22-33-7), which remains four points out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
