Petes move into tie for final playoff spot in East with 3-2 SO over Steelheads

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - Greg Betzold scored the winning goal in the shootout to give the Peterborough Petes a 3-2 win over the Mississauga Steelheads in Ontario Hockey League play Tuesday night.

Brett Findlay and Peter Ceresnak scored in regulation for the Petes (25-34-7), who moved into a tie with Kingston for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Brett Foy scored both goals for the Steelheads (25-33-8). The single point puts them one ahead of Peterborough and Kingston.

Findlay opened the scoring when he kicked a pass from his skate to his stick then fired the puck past Steelheads goalie Spencer Martin at 10:53 of the first period. Foy tied the score when he fought off a pair of defenders to knock a loose puck inside the post just over a minute later.

Ceresnak made it 2-1 Peterborough when he lifted in a backhand from a wild scramble in front of the net just before the half-way point of the second.

The Steelheads tied it in quick order again when Foy burst in from the blue line, protected the puck well and carried it across the top of the crease until Andrew D'Agostini was on the ice, then lifted it over the Petes' goalie.

Each team scored once in the first round of the shootout before Betzold potted the winner on a backhand-to-forehand fake before sending a wrist shot high into the net.

D'Agostini made 26 saves for Peterborough, and Martin made 36 stops for Mississauga.

The Petes were 0 for 3 on the power play, and the Steelheads failed on their lone opportunity.
