Verhaeghe scores twice, including winner, as the IceDogs edge the Bulls
BELLEVILLE, Ont. - Carter Verhaeghe scored two goals, including the overtime winner, as the Niagara IceDogs beat the host Belleville Bulls 5-4 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League action.
Brett Ritchie also had a pair of goals for the IceDogs (28-30-4) while Steven Shipley had a goal and an assist.
Aaron Berisha, Carter Sandlak, Austen Brassard and Alan Quine scored for the Bulls (39-15-7), who have dropped back-to-back games after winning 10 in a row.
Brent Moran stopped 33 shots for the win as Charlie Graham turned away 34 shots in a losing cause.
Ritchie opened the scoring at 17:52 of the first period after putting home a rebound.
After Berisha tied it in the second period, the third period saw a frenzy of goals and lead changes.
Belleville came out with goals from Sandlak and Brassard to go up 3-1 by the 9:45 mark, however Niagara tied the game with goals 52 seconds apart from Ritchie and Verhaeghe.
Shipley scored a go-ahead goal for the IceDogs at 19:09, but Quine forced overtime with five seconds left on the clock.
Verhaeghe scored the winner with just four seconds remaining in extra time.
Both clubs went 0 for 5 on the power play.
