Manitoban Gulutzan most likely to be named next coach of Stars

DALLAS -- The Dallas Stars are closing in on Glen Gulutzan as the NHL team's new head coach, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The newspaper reports that according to its sources the Stars are currently negotiating a contract with Gulutzan, who has been coach of the Stars' American Hockey League affiliate, the Texas Stars, the past two seasons. The 39-year-old led the AHL club to the Calder Cup final in 2010 and has guided the team to an 87-56-17 record in his two seasons behind the bench.

Kirk Muller, Peter Horacheck and Ken Hitchcock was also reportedly in the running for the job, which became vacant when the team fired Marc Crawford in April.

After a solid Western Hockey League playing career with the Moose Jaw Warriors, Brandon Wheat Kings and Saskatoon Blades, the native of The Pas, Man., played two seasons at the University of Saskatchewan before playing several minor-pro seasons in the West Coast Hockey League, the International Hockey League and Europe.

He was a player/assistant coach for two seasons with the Fresno Falcons of the WCHL before spending six seasons as bench boss with the ECHL's Las Vegas Wranglers. He joined the Texas Stars in 2009-10, leading the team to a 46-27-7 record.
