Highlight REEL Moose 2 Amerks 1

The Manitoba Moose overcame an early gaffe and rode the 26-save goaltending of Cory Schneider to a 2-1 victory over the AHL's top team, the Rochester Americans, Wednesday night at the MTS Centre.

Aaron Rome scored twice to give the Moose their winning margin before 6,342 fans. It raised Manitoba's record to 14-10-4 and sent the Amerks to just their fourth outright loss of the season.

FIRST PERIOD

The game does not open on a promising note, as Moose defenceman Neil Petruic skates it up the right wing and gives it away to Rochester's Chris Taylor. Taylor feeds it in to Graham Mink, who beats Schneider between the pads just 26 seconds in. After Dan Sexton's missed penalty shot, the Moose convert a five-on-three later in the period when Rome wrists a shot off the left post behind Amerks goalie Ryan Mior.

SECOND PERIOD

Midway through the period, the Amerks are cheating to the neutral zone but turn it over to Manitoba's Sergei Shirokov at the blue-line. Shirokov feeds an open Rome and he steps into a snap shot to the far side for his second of the game.

THIRD PERIOD

It's a blank period on the summary, making the Moose and their fans happy.

Moose 2 / Rochester 1

Game-breaker

Rome. His shots were simply perfect. It's worth noting he scored seven times for Syracuse in 48 games last season.

Better in shootouts

Sexton earned his penalty shot when he was tripped on a breakaway by Rochester's Jordan Henry. Mior foiled the deke, making it five missed regular-season penalty shots in a row for the Moose. (The team is 4-0 in shootouts this season.) The last to score on a real penalty shot? Jimmy Roy in 2006.

Raining bears

The Moose will reprise their Teddy Bear Toss later this month. It will take place during the second intermission of the Dec. 18 game vs. Lake Erie and all stuffed toys tossed onto the MTS Centre ice will be donated to the Christmas Cheer Board. Last year in a first effort, fans threw 1,345 stuffed toys on the ice and helped the Board raise an additional $2,400.

Here and gone

Centre Erik Christensen was only here for two weeks but it will have been his springboard back to the NHL. The New York Rangers claimed the 25-year-old Edmontonian on waivers from Anaheim Wednesday. Christensen scored two goals in his six-game conditioning stay with the Moose. The Moose made no secret that they had been hoping, however selfishly, he'd clear waivers and stay with them courtesy of a regular assignment from the Ducks.
