Fleming started coaching the University of Manitoba hockey team in 1980, spending nine seasons with the Bisons. He was named the CIAU coach of the year in 1985.

He also coached in Europe from 1992 to 1996 before joining the New York Islanders of the NHL as an assistant coach. Most recently, he was with the Tampa Bay Lightning as an assistant coach.

Fleming was also a key member of the Canadian national team brass for years, winning an Olympic silver medal with the national team in ’92 and a gold medal at the 2002 Olympics.

"Hockey Canada has lost a great friend, and the hockey world has lost not only a tremendous coach, but a wonderful man," said Bob Nicholson, president and CEO of Hockey Canada in a statement. "We send our condolences to Wayne's wife, Carolyn, their four children and the rest of the Fleming family."
