Brouwer sticks with Caps

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Washington Capitals have signed forward Troy Brouwer to a three-year, $11-million contract extension.

The 27-year-old Brouwer had 18 goals and 15 assists last season while playing in all 82 regular-season games. He scored two goals with two assists in the playoffs.

The Capitals acquired Brouwer in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks a year ago. He then signed a two-year, $4.7-million contract.

Snag in plan for new Oilers arena

EDMONTON -- A new downtown arena for the Edmonton Oilers hit the ditch Wednesday as city councillors rejected a bid by the NHL team for more money from taxpayers.

Mayor Stephen Mandel would not reveal an amount, but said the ball is in the court of the team's owner, pharmacy billionaire Daryl Katz.

Reporters asked Mandel if he was still optimistic the rink would proceed as planned.

"Frustrated might be a better word. But I'm optimistic in the sense (we can) get back together and see how we can make this work."

Construction on the $450-million arena is slated to begin early next year.

Leafs agree to terms with goalie

TORONTO -- The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed goaltender Ben Scrivens to a two-year contract worth $1.25 million.

Scrivens played most of last season in the AHL, where he helped the Toronto Marlies reach the Calder Cup final.
