Canes steal sniper Semin from Caps for $7 million

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes signed sniper Alexander Semin to a US$7-million, one-year deal Thursday.

Semin had 21 goals and 33 assists with the Washington Capitals last season. The 28-year-old forward also had two goals and three assists in three games during Russia's gold-medal campaign at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

"I'm very happy to be a Carolina Hurricane," Semin said in a statement. "It's a great fit for me."

He became part of a potent Capitals offence after being drafted 13th overall in 2002. The 6-foot-2, 209-pound left-winger has 197 goals, 211 assists and 450 penalty minutes in 469 career regular-season games. He is one of 18 players to have averaged 30 goals or more a year in the last six seasons.

Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford said he hoped Semin would fit into a team that hasn't been to the playoffs since 2008-09.

Oilers sign farmhands

EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Oilers signed Alex Plante and Chris VandeVelde to one-year contracts Thursday. Plante, a 23-year-old defenceman from Brandon, had one goal and 12 assists in 38 games last season with the Oilers' AHL affiliate Oklahoma City Barons. He had one assist in three games with Edmonton. The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder was drafted 15th overall by the Oilers in 2007. VandeVelde, 25, had seven goals and 16 assists in 68 games with the Barons last season.

The 6-2, 190-pound centre added six goals during 14 post-season games.

VandeVelde was taken 97th overall by Edmonton in the 2005 draft.

Flyers keep Voracek

PHILADELPHIA -- The Flyers signed forward Jakub Voracek to a four-year contract Thursday worth $17 million.

Voracek came to Philadelphia last season in the deal that sent forward Jeff Carter to Columbus and had a big debut season in the Eastern Conference. He had 18 goals and 49 points in 78 regular-season games last season, and finished third on the Flyers in post-season scoring with 10 points.

"We are happy to have Jake under contract," Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren said, "and look forward to him being a big part of our future."

Across four seasons in the NHL, Voracek has 57 goals and 183 points in 319 regular-season games. He has played in just 15 post-season games, 11 of them with Philadelphia last season. His salary cap will be $4.25 million, annually.
