PITTSBURGH -- Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby has been cleared to resume practising with his teammates today although the timing of his return to game action has not been determined, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Thursday.
Crosby, who suffered a fractured jaw when hit in the face by a puck on March 30, will not play in the club's regular-season finale on Saturday against the visiting Carolina Hurricanes.
He could, however, dress for the opening game of the playoffs next week. The Post-Gazette also reported Crosby underwent several root canals Thursday to repair damage.
Earlier, doctors inserted titanium plates to repair several breaks in his jaw.
WASHINGTON -- Ottawa Senators defenceman Erik Karlsson has returned to the lineup after being sidelined 21/2 months with a torn left Achilles tendon.
Karlsson, last season's Norris Trophy winner as the NHL's top defenceman, played against the Washington Capitals on Thursday night, his first appearance since Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke stepped on the back of his leg on Feb. 13.
Karlsson recorded a shot less than a minute into Thursday's game.
He originally was expected to miss the rest of the season after surgery, but recently returned to practice.
Karlsson sat out 31 games, returning in time to help Ottawa down the stretch in its push for the playoffs.
He led NHL defencemen with 19 goals and 78 points last season. He had six goals and 10 points in 14 games this season entering Thursday.
RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes put all their Staals in their starting lineup.
The Hurricanes had brothers Eric, Jordan and Jared Staal on the line that started the game Thursday night against the New York Rangers.
Jared Staal was called up from Charlotte of the AHL on Wednesday and coach Kirk Muller said he probably would skate on Jordan's line.
But Muller pulled a game-time surprise by putting all three on the starting line.
STATS says it's the 10th time in the history of the four major North American pro sports leagues that three brothers have played for the same team during the same season. It hasn't happened since the Stastnys (Peter, Anton and Marian) all played for the Quebec Nordiques in 1985.
RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes say Alexander Semin is out with a concussion.
Coach Kirk Muller said Thursday that Semin will miss their final two games of the season, including the home finale against the New York Rangers.
Semin ends his season with 13 goals and 31 assists while establishing himself as a valuable component of the Hurricanes' top line. He was Carolina's marquee free-agent acquisition this off-season after coming over from division rival Washington.
ST. LOUIS -- Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak has been activated from the injured list after missing 12 games because of a groin injury.
Halak was activated before Thursday night's game against the Calgary Flames, and he served as the backup to St. Louis starter Brian Elliott. Halak hasn't played since April 1.
Halak (6-5-1) entered the season as the Blues' No. 1 goalie, but because of groin problems has been limited to only 16 games.
