Finns put freeze on Slovakia

HELSINKI, Finland -- Janne Pesonen scored the game's only goal and Petri Vehanen made 26 saves Sunday as Finland picked up its second straight 1-0 win at the IIHF World Hockey Championship with a victory over Slovakia.

Pesonen beat Slovakian goalie Jan Laco at 7:32 of the first with a backhander from the slot to give the Finns a lead they would not surrender.

Finland beat Bulgaria by the same 2-1 scoreline in its opener on Friday.

In other action in Helsinki, France beat Kazakhstan 6-3 and Switzerland got past Bulgaria 3-2.

The other group is playing its games in Stockholm, Sweden. Italy downed Denmark 4-3 in overtime, Russia topped Norway 4-2 and Latvia got past Germany 3-2.

At Helsinki, Laco finished with 21 saves for the Slovaks, who opened with a 3-2 loss to Canada.

France 6, Kazakhstan 3

At Helsinki, Kevin Hecquefeuille scored two power-play goals as France doubled up Kazakhstan for its first win at the world championship.

France sits at 1-1, while the Kazaks fall to 0-2.

Switzerland 3, Bulgaria 2

At Helsinki, Kevin Romy scored the winner in the third as Switzerland improved to 2-0.

Bulgaria is 0-2.

Italy 4, Denmark 3 (OT)

At Stockholm, Giulio Scandella scored in overtime as Italy defeated Denmark.

Italy improved to 1-1, while the Danes fell to 0-2.

Russia 4, Norway 2

At Stockholm, Pavel Datsyuk, Denis Denisov, Nikolai Kulyomin and Alexander Perezhogin scored for the Russians in their win over Norway.

Russia is at 2-0, while Norway dropped to 0-2.

Latvia 3, Germany 2

At Helsinki, Aleksejs Sirokovs scored the winner in the third.

Both teams sit at 1-1.
