Hawks on brink of crown
A second straight shutout victory on Wednesday night and the Pembina Valley Hawks are one win away from the Manitoba AAA Female Midget Hockey League championship title.
Backstopped by goaltender Britni Mowat, Pembina Valley defeated the Winnipeg Avros 2-0 on Wednesday at the MTS Iceplex. With the win and the 9-0 victory recorded in the series opener on Tuesday in Morden, the Hawks lead the best-of-five series 2-0. The third game is Sunday in Morden at 8 p.m.
"To know that we've outscored them 11-nothing going into the third game, that's pretty big and gives our team such a big boost of confidence to keep it going," said Hawks captain Madison Hutchinson. "Getting that (2-0) lead on them early in their building and keep the pressure going, and we have a stellar goalie so they were going to have to get three past her. We're going to have score a few more next game so we don't have so much pressure on us."
The Hawks scored both their goals in the first period with Jessica Kaminsky, who had five points in the first game of the series, and Lauren Keen scoring 10 minutes apart.
Avros goaltender Amanda Schubert, swiping pucks out of the air and stopping blue-line blasts by Hutchison, was tested plenty by the Hawks, who seemed to be shooting from everywhere.
"The first period is not always our best period and I thought we were the better team on the ice, but Mowat is a great goalie and we need to break that goose-egg on her," said Avros head coach Ashley Van Aggelen.
"Second and third period we outshot them, definitely had control. We were given second and third chances and we just couldn't find the back of the net."
The Avros outshot the Hawks for the second straight game with Wednesday's 30-23 margin but could not get anything past Mowat who slammed the door repeatedly.
