Jets defenceman Zach Redmond injured during practice, undergoes surgery

RALEIGH, N.C. - Winnipeg Jets defenceman Zach Redmond underwent surgery Thursday after being cut by a skate during practice earlier in the day.

Redmond was rushed to hospital in the Raleigh area to repair a laceration to his right femoral artery and vein in his mid-thigh region. The surgery took approximately three hours.

The 24-year-old NHL rookie was accidentally cut by a teammate's skate during a practice drill in front of the net. The team's training staff rushed to his aid as blood pooled on the ice.

Redmond will be out indefinitely, joining fellow injured Jets defenceman Tobias Enstrom, who is out two weeks with a injured shoulder.

Redmond has a goal and three assists in eight games this year for Winnipeg (6-8-1), which is in North Carolina to take on the Hurricanes on Thursday night.

The accident comes just over a week after Ottawa Senators defenceman Erik Karlsson went down with a left Achilles injury when he was cut by a skate blade late in the second period in the Senators' 4-2 loss to Pittsburgh.

Karlsson is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
