Meds have Wild goalie feeling a little 'off'

VANCOUVER -- Minnesota goalie Josh Harding has told the Wild he's feeling a little "off" from medication he takes to fight multiple sclerosis.

The Wild recalled goalie Darcy Kuemper from their AHL affiliate before Tuesday's game in Vancouver.

Harding had a shutout against Dallas but gave up five goals at Detroit and was pulled in the first period Jan. 30 against Chicago after giving up two scores on four shots. Harding was diagnosed with the disease this summer but hadn't experienced any setbacks or complications until now.

Blue Jackets fire GM

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Blue Jackets have fired general manager Scott Howson.

The move was announced by John Davidson, the club's director of hockey operations, in an email on Tuesday night.

Howson was hired as executive vice-president and general manager on June 15, 2007.

During his tenure, the Blue Jackets went 173-190-59 and made their lone Stanley Cup playoff appearance after a franchise-best 41-31-10 mark in the 2008-09 season.

The club then fell on hard times and had the worst record in the NHL last season (29-46-7, 65 points). Star forward Rick Nash was traded during the off-season.

The Blue Jackets (4-7-2) will begin a six-game road trip Friday at Los Angeles.

Pandolfo inks two-way

BOSTON -- The Boston Bruins have signed forward Jay Pandolfo to a one-year, two-way contract.

The deal that was announced Tuesday would pay him $600,000 if he is in the NHL and $350,000 in the minor leagues. Pandolfo, 38, was placed on waivers, a move that allows the Bruins to send him to Providence of the AHL.

Flames count on Irving

CALGARY -- For the first time since he became a Calgary Flame almost decade ago, Miikka Kiprusoff faces an extended absence from Calgary's net.

The 36-year-old goaltender, who has played 70-plus games for seven consecutive seasons, will be out of the lineup two more weeks in addition to the week he's already missed with a sprained knee ligament.

The loss of their workhorse comes at a difficult time for the Flames this lockout-shortened season. Tied for last in the Western Conference at 3-4-3, Calgary will play eight games before Kiprusoff can realistically be expected to rejoin the lineup.

So Leland Irving has suddenly gone from Calgary's No. 3 goalie in the minors to NHL starter.

The 24-year-old, drafted in the first round by Calgary in 2006, played only six games for the AHL's Abbotsford Heat during the NHL lockout. But Irving beat out incumbent backup Henrik Karlsson for a job behind Kiprusoff at Calgary's training camp in January.
