NHL lockout: Day 15
A CALDER PASS?
Jeff Skinner, the winner of the 2011 Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in the NHL, did not report to the Charlotte Checkers' AHL camp Friday. Skinner, though assigned by the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes, has been excused for the time being, with permission from the Hurricanes, the Checkers said.
A BARGAINING CHIP
The NHL and NHLPA will be bargaining for the participation of NHL players in the 2014 Olympics, a reality seemingly lost on longtime IIHF president Rene Fasel. Fasel said Friday that the Olympic tournament is being prepared and scheduled on the assumption that NHL players will be there and that they will be expected to participate. Long known to try to badger, needle and upstage the NHL at every possible chance, the Swiss IIHF president is quite obviously trying to put the screws to both factions trying to work out a new NHL labour agreement.
PUCKS ON SCREENS
Sportsnet, relegated to just several regional broadcast agreements among Canadian NHL teams, will have live hockey on the air starting Oct. 12. The network is continuing its relationship with junior hockey and has a Friday night game schedule every week throughout the season. It kicks off with Edmonton vs. Calgary on the 12th. Sportsnet also has a deal with the AHL to broadcast games, with an enhanced window to do so in the event the NHL lockout continues much longer.
