Oilers can Renney

EDMONTON -- Tom Renney's time with the Edmonton Oilers has expired.

General manager Steve Tambellini flew to Castlegar, B.C., on Thursday to meet with his head coach, ending weeks of speculation that a change was coming.

As of now, associate coach Ralph Krueger, as well as assistants Kelly Buchberger, Steve Smith and Frederic Chabot remain with the organization. Their future hinges on the new bench boss.

As for Renney's replacement, Tambellini said there were a few people they were interested in and he was hopeful a decision would be made by next month's NHL draft.

"I'm not going to dissect Tom as a coach. He's done a good job for us," said Tambellini. "We're just trying to find a way to get better.

"We want to make sure we're doing all we can as we enter this next phase of development, so that we are putting ourselves in a spot where we are competing for playoff spots."

Renney was first hired by the Oilers in 2009-10 as an associate head coach to work alongside Pat Quinn and then stepped up into the main role one season later. Now he's looking for work.

Renney wanted to take a couple of days before he spoke to the media, but at one point last season, he talked about the legacy he wanted to leave whenever his time with the team ended.

"We're in transition and sometimes you have to reinvent yourself and we've talked about that with certain guys. There's a new normal and that trend will likely continue," Renney said at the time. "It's no different for me. Am I going to be the guy standing here when they lift the Stanley Cup? What are the odds? I sure hope so, but I have to do everything to leave my (legacy) behind."

The Oilers, who went from 25 wins in 2010-11 to 32 victories a season later, will move forward with their fourth head coach in five years.
