Zetterberg gets the 'C'

PLYMOUTH, Mich. -- Henrik Zetterberg has some big skates to fill.

The Detroit Red Wings are expected to officially name Zetterberg their captain soon, and he's already been leading the team on the ice during practices this week.

Zetterberg deflected questions Monday about the honour everyone in the Motor City knows he's about to get.

He will open up only a little bit about how much he learned from former Red Wings captains Nicklas Lidstrom and Steve Yzerman. His teammates expect him to speak up more than the soft-spoken Lidstrom did.

Perry, Getzlaf motivated

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf have ample motivation to do something remarkable in the Anaheim Ducks' shortened season.

While they attempt to improve on the Ducks' recent past, they're also playing with their futures in doubt.

Perry and Getzlaf will be unrestricted free agents this summer if they don't agree to new deals in Anaheim, their home for eight seasons as linemates and friends.

Anaheim general manager Bob Murray opened training camp by expressing his strong desire to re-sign Perry, the goal-scoring former NHL MVP, and Getzlaf, the Ducks' captain and top playmaker.

But both sides must make decisions before a deal is done. The Ducks must figure out how much they're willing to spend on two 27-year-old forwards with top-level talent and disappointing recent results.

Oilers grab Fistric

EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Oilers added some needed depth to their defence Monday, acquiring Mark Fistric from the Dallas Stars in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2013 NHL draft.

"A lot of people are looking for the same type of addition to their depth chart," Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini said. "Defencemen at this time are difficult to find. We want to be in a proactive mindset, if we could get something now, obviously work him into this group as quick as possible, the better we will be."

Fistric, an Edmonton native, joins an Oilers team with a wounded defence corps. Already missing blue-liner Andy Sutton, Edmonton was dealt another blow when defenceman Theo Peckham left the ice with an injury during Monday's practice.

Kiprusoff sparks Flames

CALGARY -- With captain Jarome Iginla sidelined for the second straight day and Jiri Hudler gone to attend to a family emergency, the Calgary Flames were looking for something to spark the team at practice.

Goalie Miikka Kiprusoff came through Monday when he made a highlight-reel save to deny forward Roman Horak from scoring what seemed like a sure goal during an intense scrimmage.

Kiprusoff slid from right to left across his crease and stretched his right leg out to make a pad save to turn aside Horak's shot.

"That's why he's one of the best goalies in the NHL," said Horak, who one-timed a saucer pass from Tim Jackman.
