Scheifele, Colts gallop into final

  • Print

WINNIPEG Jets prospect Mark Scheifele in February took the news of his return to the Barrie Colts as well as he could, promising to go back and show the Winnipeg Jets what they have in store for the future.

And the Ontario Hockey League's leading scorer did just that, helping the Colts ride into the OHL championship series against the London Knights with a Game 7 victory over the Belleville Bulls to claim the Bobby Orr Trophy as OHL Eastern Conference champs.

Scheifele picked up a helper on Aaron Ekblad's tying goal in the first period and the Colts never looked back, ending with a 3-1 win in Belleville Monday night. Tyson Fawcett scored the game-winner while Ryan O'Connor added an insurance marker with another assist from Scheifele.

The Bulls got out to a hot start and held Barrie without a shot for the opening 12 minutes of the game. Alan Quine was the lone Belleville scorer.

The Colts were outshot 37-28 but staved off disaster after Belleville rallied from a 3-1 series deficit to nearly play the spoiler.

The OHL Championship Final begins Friday in London before moving to Barrie for Games 3 and 4.
