Smythe winner Quick inks 10-year contract

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Kings had never done a 10-year deal. Not with defenseman Drew Doughty, not with centre Anze Kopitar and not even going back to the days of the hockey legend himself, Wayne Gretzky.

That barrier was broken with the team's 10-year contract extension with Conn Smythe-winning goalie Jonathan Quick. Those familiar with the deal but not authorized to speak said it was worth in excess of $50 million but tapered off in the final three years. Other reports put it at about $58 million.

Schneider, Canucks agree

VANCOUVER -- The Vancouver Canucks and goalie Cory Schneider have agreed "in principle" to a new contract, general manager Mike Gillis tweeted Thursday night.

The 26-year-old Schneider was set to become a restricted free agent on Sunday.

"We have agreed in principle to a deal with Cory Schneider. More news in the next few days," Gillis posted on his official Twitter account.

Schneider took over in goal for Vancouver starter Roberto Luongo in this year's playoffs as the Canucks were upset in the first round by the Los Angeles Kings.

The Canucks have made it known this off-season that they are looking to trade Luongo and the remaining 10 years on his mammoth contract.

Schneider earned US$900,000 last year and is due for a hefty raise.

Goldwater rejected

PHOENIX -- A judge has upheld the Glendale City Council's vote on an arena lease agreement with a prospective owner of the Phoenix Coyotes.

Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Dean Fink on Thursday rejected a claim by conservative watchdog group Goldwater Institute that the city should have had open bidding on arena operations for Jobing.com Arena, the home of the Coyotes, rather than accept an offer from former San Jose Sharks CEO Greg Jamison.
