Defenceman Thomas Lenchyshyn of Steinbach topped a list of 31 Manitobans selected at Thursday's 2012 WHL Bantam Draft in Calgary.
Lenchyshyn was chosen by the Lethbridge Hurricanes with the 18th pick in Thursday's first round.
Lenchyshyn, 15, played this season for the Eastman Selects Midget AAA team, amassing a team-high 123 penalty minutes to go with his five goals and 14 points in 42 games.
He started the season as a 14-year-old in the midget league, an unusual script.
"I think he's only the second one in Eastman," said his coach, Troy Kennedy. "The last one in our region was Ian White (now of the Detroit Red Wings)."
Kennedy said the decision to keep the 6-foot-1, 185-pounder on the team at the start of the season was an obvious one, despite his age.
"To be able to do it, the player has to be on the top part of your team," he said. "Otherwise, Hockey Manitoba would just say a 15- or 16-year-old could be in that spot."
Also in the first round, Winnipegger Keegan Kolesar was selected by the Seattle Thunderbirds with the 20th pick.
Kolesar, 15, is a right-winger who played for the Winnipeg Hawks bantams.
The Brandon Wheat Kings, with their first pick, 12th overall, chose centre Braylon Schmyr from Calgary.
In the second round, the only Manitoban was Winnipegger Aaron Boyd, a centre, chosen by the Prince George Cougars with the 43rd pick.
Other Manitobans selected by WHL clubs on Thursday included: Winnipeg centre Braden Purtill, 46th overall by the Tri-City Americans; defenceman Ryan Gardiner went 52nd to the Moose Jaw Warriors; centre Colt Conrad of St. Alphonse went 53rd to Lethbridge; Tyson Verhelst of Brandon was the first Manitoba goalie picked, 58th by the Spokane Chiefs; centre Jackson Keane, son of Stanley Cup champ and former Manitoba Moose captain Mike Keane, 73rd by Swift Current; Elma's Kirklan Lycar, a centre, 78th by Brandon; centre Jordan Stallard of Brandon, 83rd by Calgary; defenceman Ethan Williams of Winnipeg, 90th by Moose Jaw; left-winger Meyer Neil of Boissevain, 96th by Red Deer; centre Scott Petkau of Steinbach, 105th by Calgary; left-winger Travis Kilbrei of Arborg, 108th by Portland; centre Rylee Zimmer of Russell, 109th by Regina; left-winger Dallas Miller of Winnipeg, 111th by Prince Albert; defenceman Mark Taraschuk of Winnipeg, 112th by Brandon; goalie Cole Kehler of Altona, 123rd by Kamloops; defenceman Mitchell Dyck of Winkler, 126th to Medicine Hat; left-winger Garrett Armour of Winnipeg, 135th to Edmonton; right-winger Wade Allison of Roland, 144th by Brandon; centre Tyler Jeanson of Graysville, 184th by Kamloops; left-winger Liam Mcleod of LaSalle, 188th by Saskatoon; defenceman James Shearer, 193rd by Calgary; left-winger Shane Roullette of Winnipeg, 194th by Moose Jaw; defenceman Desmond Nevin of Steinbach, 202nd by Everett; defenceman Riley Thomsen of Oakbank, 216th to Moose Jaw; right-winger Michael Wirth of Morden, 224th to Everett; defenceman Kruz Listmayer of Winnipeg, 227th to Swift Current; defenceman Mackenzie Dwyer of Winnipeg, 233rd to Saskatoon; and left-winger Dexter Kuczek of East St. Paul, 234th to Saskatoon.
