Winnipeg's Leipsic signs with Preds

  • Print

WINNIPEGGER Brendan Leipsic has an NHL contract with the Nashville Predators. The three-year entry-level deal for the 19-year-old forward was registered with the league this week.

Leipsic, drafted last June in the third round, 89th overall by the Preds, is not done playing this season.

His Portland Winterhawks, champions of the Western Hockey League, will play in tonight's semifinal game in Saskatoon at the MasterCard Memorial Cup.

Leipsic, who turned 19 last weekend, has authoured one of the finest stories in the Canadian Hockey League this season.

A small-ish forward at 5-9, he posted 58 points in his second WHL season in 2011-12, earning his draft selection last June.

This season, on a powerful Portland team, he bumped his offensive output to 120 points, a 62-point jump that certainly aided the Winterhawks' championship season. Leipsic was also a plus-55 this season, and has recorded 24 more points in the post-season this spring.

Leipsic's regular-season point total was good enough to share the Bobby Clarke Trophy for the WHL's scoring title. He shared the trophy with linemate Nicolas Petan. The other member of the regular Portland line, Ty Rattie, finished third with 110 points.
