Oilers' Hemsky out for season

EDMONTON -- Edmonton Oilers winger Ales Hemsky will undergo surgery on his ailing shoulder and will miss the remainder of the NHL season, an Oilers official confirmed Friday night.

Hemsky has been bothered by a sore shoulder for weeks, but other than missing one game, had soldiered on. But he was plowed into the end boards by Los Angeles centre Michal Handzus on Wednesday in a 3-1 Kings victory, and didn't play the final 32 minutes.

The Oilers have lost three players for extended periods -- centres Shawn Horcoff, winger Ethan Moreau and defenceman Sheldon Souray -- to shoulder surgeries the last few years.

Without Hemsky, the Oilers played Gilbert Brule on the top line with Sam Gagner and Dustin Penner against the San Jose Sharks on Friday night.
