Russian coach says Nyet to Canadiens
You didn't know the successful coach of Russia's national team was on the list? The revelation was made by Igor Zakharian, Bykov's assistant with the national team and, until recently, with CSKA Moscow, the famed Red Army team in the Kontinental Hockey League.
Zakharian told an interviewer the pair received offers to coach in Sweden, Switzerland and Canada before signing on with the KHL team Salevat Yulayev.
When Zakharian was asked about the offer from Canada, he replied: "The president of Montreal called Vyacheslav and said that he would like to see us as coaches for the Canadiens."
The Canadiens had no comment. Bykov led Russia to back-to-back gold medals at the world championships. And, if you thought Alex Kovalev had a contentious relationship with Guy Carbonneau, Bykov is the guy who decided he didn't want Kovalev on the Russian national team.
