Senators set to hire ex-Jet MacLean as head coach
OTTAWA -- Bryan Murray has found his man. At least he hopes he has.
A NHL front-office source confirmed on Monday that Murray, the Ottawa Senators general manager, will hire former Detroit assistant Paul MacLean, 53, to be the ninth coach of the team.
MacLean will be the fourth coach Murray has hired in his tenure as general manager, after John Paddock, Craig Hartsburg and Cory Clouston. Murray fired Clouston on April 9 after the Senators missed the playoffs.
The Senators were working to get MacLean's staff in place before the formal announcement, which is expected to be made today.
MacLean has quietly built an impressive coaching resume after his NHL career. From the start of Murray's search, he was one of the front-runners for the job.
He spent the past six seasons as an assistant to Mike Babcock in Detroit.
Murray hired both of them in 2002 in Anaheim: Babcock as head coach of the Ducks, MacLean as an assistant.
From 1980-91, he played in 719 NHL regular-season games for St. Louis, Winnipeg, and Detroit, scoring 324 goals and 349 assists for 673 points.
