SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The San Jose Sharks fired coach Ron Wilson on Monday after the team's latest disappointing early ouster from the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Wilson, hired by the club in December 2002, is the Sharks' leader in wins and winning percentage, but San Jose only advanced past the second round of the post-season once with him behind the bench.

The Sharks were the No. 2 seed in this year's Western Conference playoffs, but were eliminated in six games in the second round by the Dallas Stars.
San Jose earned two Pacific Division titles, including this season when the Sharks went 49-23-10, under Wilson and reached the Western Conference finals in 2004 before falling to upstart Calgary. In four-plus seasons, Wilson went 206-134-45 in 385 regular-season games.
Wilson is the franchise leader in post-season games, posting a 28-24 mark in 52 games.
Leafs' Bell sentenced to work program
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mark Bell won't spend any nights behind bars this summer but will spend his days working at a California jail, Rogers Sportsnet reported on its website Monday.
After pleading no contest to drunken driving and hit and run charges last summer, Bell was sentenced Monday to a work program.
Bell will report to the prison every morning and work eight hour days a day from June 2 to Aug. 15, before returning home. A judge then will decide if the work program should be extended. The jail term stems from a hit and run incident on Labour Day of 2006, in which Bell rear ended a pickup truck near San Jose. Bell was playing with the Sharks at the time.
Redden's agent says no contract yet to reject
OTTAWA -- Wade Redden, an unrestricted free agent as of July 1, hasn't rejected any offer to return to the Ottawa Senators mainly because he hasn't received one, his agent said Monday.
Don Meehan also labelled as "nonsense" a report last week that said Redden had rejected a request by the Senators to take as much as a $3-million US pay reduction from the $6.5 million he made last season.
Meehan said he hasn't even yet talked to Senators general manager Bryan Murray, though he expects he will soon.
Redden, a 30-year-old defenceman, has played his entire career with the Senators. While it is unlikely Redden will return to the Senators it's also not unthinkable he would take a pay reduction to return.
Redden said during the season that he'd be open to taking a reduction, and Meehan's philosophy is to place his clients where they are comfortable and have a chance to win.
