Jon's Golden Run sparkles in debut
TWO-YEAR-OLD chestnut gelding Jon's Golden Run, with apprentice jockey Prayven Badrie in the saddle, had his debut Wednesday night at Assiniboia Downs, finishing second by a neck over five furlongs behind River Dance (Rohan Singh) and in front of I'minittowinit (Mark Anderson). At 12-1 odds he paid $14.80 to place and $8.60 to show.
Named for Russell's Jon Montgomery, Canada's 2010 Olympic skeleton gold medallist, Jon's Golden Run's performance would have made his parents, Bob and John (sire) and Sheza Honey (dam), proud.
His trainer, Emile Corbel, was beaming from ear to ear Thursday morning, saying he was actually pleased that the horse, which was bred in Russell at the Cam Ziprick Stables, ran second.
"He learned a lot in his first race," said Corbel. "He was boxed in early, and he found out what it was like to have dirt kicked in his face."
Corbel was especially pleased with the way the Edwina Larsen-owned horse rallied coming down the stretch to bolt past I'minittowinit and challenge River Dance at the wire.
Corbel says he'll rest Jon's Golden Run up for the next little while, with the idea of perhaps running him in a the Aug. 26 six furlongs Sales Stakes and the Sept. 18 one mile Buffalo Stakes.
