UNIVERSITY of Manitoba volleyball veteran Chris Voth has been named to the 2011 Summer Universiade Canadian men's squad.

The 20-year-old left side hitter will join 13 teammates in Shenzhen, China, in August at the 26th edition of the World University Summer Games.

Voth was a Canada West second team all-star last year, his third with the Bisons. He was tenth in the conference with 209 kills and sixth with 15 service aces.

"I'm very excited to be representing Canada at the Summer Universiade. It has always been a dream of mine to play for the national team," Voth said.

NORTH Winnipeg Minor Baseball has become the 12th RBI-approved association in Canada.

Attaining the designation (RBI stands for Reaching Baseball Ideals) requires an association to conform to standards set out by Baseball Canada in four areas - development programs, membership with Baseball Canada, training for coaches and accessibility.

NWMB has nearly 400 players registered in programs ranging from "Rally Cap" (for kids aged four to eight) to midget.

THE Manitoba Gryphons junior lacrosse team came up short in its inaugural game in the Western Canada Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League but it bounced back to take its second.

Despite leading for most of the game, the Gryphons lost 11-9 to the Red Deer Rampage in Saskatoon. It then rebounded to defeat the Calgary Shamrocks 8-7 in overtime.

"The players are determined to learn from their mistakes and are committed to improving their level of play each day," said Ken Stuebing, the team's coach.
