Centre stage

Jennifer Bell of the Sanford Collegiate Sabres hockey team cleaned up as the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association (MHSAA) announced winners of several hockey awards and scholarships for the 2009-2010 season.

Bell and Sara Oswald of the Oak Park Raiders each won one of the Alexander Josephson Memorial $2,000 scholarships. Then Bell, the Sabres captain, and Samantha Hink of Miami School, picked up $1,000 scholarships each from the Ken (Friar) Nicolson and Sami Jo Small Awards, sponsored by the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame and Museum. Bell then added to her windfall when she and Noah Yagi of St. Paul's High School each cashed in by winning a Winnipeg Jets Alumni and Friends $1,000 scholarship.

Other awards went to: Matt Geddes of the provincial AAAA champions Vincent Massey Trojans of Winnipeg as the Most Valuable Player in high school hockey, winning the Ed Belfour Award; the D'arcy Bain/Fred Stevenson Award will see a $500 scholarship go to Jacob Weidenhamer of Deloraine Collegiate, and the Easton Unsung Hero Award goes to Zach Kurtenbach of Deloraine Collegiate.

-- Jacob Miller of the Westgate Mennonite Collegiate basketball team has been awarded the 2010 Garett Lee Sidor Memorial $500 Scholarship by the MHSAA.

His Westgate Wings basketball team won the provincial AAA championship this past season, and he was named Most Valuable Player and also awarded the Players Choice Award.

-- The Midget Football League of Manitoba will play a pair of games Sunday at the Frank Whyte Field (Fife at Inkster) to raise money for the Canadian Liver Foundation. The first game will feature the provincial champion Eastman Raiders against the Greendell Falcons at noon. The second game will see the North Winnipeg Nomads and the St. Vital Mustangs, starting at 3:15 p.m.

Admission/donations are $5 per person or $10 per family.

-- Altona Aces fastball pitcher Jennie von Doellen is the Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week. The 5-foot-8 von Doellen led her the Aces to a Zone 4 championship, helping them qualify for the provincial championships in Morden Friday and Saturday.

-- The Home Run Sports Winnipeg High School Athlete of the Week is Colton Farago of the Kelvin Clippers soccer team. The leader on defence helped the Clippers to an undefeated season, allowing only four goals in nine games, as well as a city conference championship with a 7-0 win over Grant Park.
