Centre stage

-- Former Vincent Massey Collegiate and Michigan State University athlete Nicole Edwards has recently become the ninth-fastest woman in the 1,500 metres.

At the Oxy High Performance meet in Eagle Rock, Calif., her first of the season, Edwards, who is now running for Athletics Canada, edged Great Britain's Jemma Simpson on May 22 by .05 seconds with a time of four minutes 6.34 seconds. It's the fastest time for a Canadian this outdoor season and moves her to the ninth-fastest on the world list.

"I didn't think I'd run 4:06, but I felt I was ready to go 4:10, and I knew I would be disappointed if I didn't," Edwards said in a post-race interview on www.runnerspace.com.

Edwards' previous best in the 1,500 was 4:12.05.

-- Tyler Penner of Miles Macdonnell Collegiate is the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association's Student Manager of the Year. The award carries a $500 scholarship, which Penner will spend on his post-secondary education.

He has been involved with almost all Buckeyes teams in his three years at Miles Mac. He has been team manager for football, boys hockey and junior varsity and varsity boys basketball.

-- Rugby and track are centre stage this week as the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association announced its Winnipeg and rural athletes of the week.

Amanda Morrison of the Shaftesbury Titans girls rugby team is the Home Run Sports Winnipeg recipient. The 5-foot-9 captain leads the undefeated team in tries, tackles and converts.

Miami Marlins sprinter Brendan Hanks is the Tri-Star Rural honoree. Hanks won the 100 metres in 12.17 seconds and won the high jump at 1.76 metres at the Zone 4 championships, qualifying to compete at the Milk Provincial Championships, which run today through Saturday at the University of Manitoba.

-- Dane Crowley, who split his 2007-08 season between the Western Hockey League's Everett Silvertips and the American Hockey League's Norfolk Admirals, has committed to play along the blue-line for the University of Manitoba Bisons in the 2010-11 season.

A red shirt with the Herd last year, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Crowley, 23, also played on the AHL's Houston Aeros and the ECHL's Phoenix RoadRunners in the 2008-09 season.

"Dane will make an immediate impact for the Bisons and should be one of the top defencemen in the Canada West Conference this season," Bisons head coach Mike Sirant said in a news release.

Sirant also announced that Winnipegger Jeremy Schappert will join the Bisons program. Schappert, 21, finished the 2009-10 season with the Seattle Thunderbirds after five WHL seasons. The 6-foot, 189-pound defenceman registered his best statistical season in Seattle in 2009-10, scoring 10 goals and 38 assists.

-- Michelle Hamilton had a try and a convert (seven points) to lead Vincent Massey Trojans to a 17-10 victory over St. Mary's Academy Flames in the Winnipeg Varsity Girls High School Rugby League championship final Tuesday.

Also scoring tries for the Trojans were Sara Trunzo and Alysa Mailhot. The Trojans will now move up to the provincial championship in Brandon on Saturday at John Reilly Field.
