City's Saunders loses racquetball final

It just wasn’t meant to be for Winnipegger Jennifer Saunders in this year’s Racquetball World Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Saunders, 30, was defeated 15-11 and 15-2 in Tuesday’s women’s singles final by Mexico’s Paola Longoria .

It’s the second time Saunders has made the finals. Her last time came 10 years ago at the 2002 World Championships where she also lost, this time to the USA’s Cheryl Gudinas.

Saunders beat Gudinas in the semi-finals Monday to punch her ticket to today's gold medal game.

Longoria defeated two-time world champion Rhonda Rajsich from the U.S. en route to her first final.

Canadians Frédérique Lambert of Montreal and Josée Grand'Maître of Longueuil, Que. finished the tournament with the bronze medal.
