Manitoban takes home gold in Western Canada Summer Games

As is his habit, Sam Vincent of Manitoba went to the front early in the Western Canada Summer Games 1,500 metre race Saturday in Kamloops, B.C., but with 350 metres to go, found the pack was pressing him, so he kicked it into second gear.

The result was a first-place finish and Team Manitoba’s first gold medal in four minutes 01.3 seconds.

"I went out there and gave it all I had, just like I always do. But with 350 to go, everyone started moving so I decided to let loose," said Vincent.

Alexandra Allen won a bronze for Manitoba in the women’s pole vault with a height of 3.4 metres. Allen finished in a tie with fellow Manitoban Sarah Boila and Saskatchewan’s Courtney Erickson, but the medal went to Allen as she had the least misses.

"It was a great competition," said Allen. "I am very pleased with my performance. I expected to jump high, and a medal would have been a nice extra, but I did them both."

In other events, Manitoba’s Meagan Paracholski was sixth in the women's 1,500 metre race with a time of 4:38.10. Nicole Dubois came in eighth with a time of 4:57.68. Connor Macauley finished seventh in the men’s hammer with a toss of 37.94.
