Ali gloves set record at auction
TWO pairs of Muhammad Ali fight-worn gloves (when he was known as Cassius Clay) from his Feb. 25, 1964 bout against Sonny Liston and his gloves from his March 8, 1971 bout against Joe Frazier each sold for $385,848 in an SCP auction that concluded Saturday. The sale set a world-record price for any piece of boxing memorabilia at public auction in Laguna Niguel, Calif.
The winning bidders asked to remain anonymous.
The Angelo Dundee Estate Collection of boxing memorabilia, more than 100 items spanning the breadth of Hall of Fame trainer Dundee's career (he trained Ali for most of the fighter's career), brought in more than $1.3 million. Jim Dundee, son of the late Angelo Dundee, plans to donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale to the Muhammad Ali Foundation and the auction will also help the Dundee family fulfill Angelo's wish that necessary medical care be provided and funded for Jim's sister, who suffers from multiple sclerosis.
The remainder of the fall auction was set to end Saturday night, which included Ozzie Smith baseball memorabilia, highlighted by his 13 Gold Glove awards from 1980-1992, the personal basketball memorabilia of hall of famers Sam Jones, Oscar Robertson and David Thompson, Paul Hornung football memorabilia, Babe Ruth's 1922 team sweater, a Mickey Mantle's 1964-1967 model game-worn jacket and a T210 Old Mill Joe Jackson card.
