Game-day decision
UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- New York Islanders head coach Jack Capuano got out of the hospital Sunday morning after surgery to remove kidney stones and went straight to Nassau Coliseum.
There's no time in this 48-game season to miss too many meetings. So Capuano got a ride over to the arena, watched the Islanders practice and then headed home to rest and mull over the video cuts he'd seen from the team's 2-1 loss to the Devils on Saturday night.
Capuano will be a game-day decision today to coach the Isles' noon game against the Lightning.
American fans tune in
NEW YORK -- NHL fans in the United States have tuned in to hockey's return to television.
NBC's broadcast Saturday earned the highest preliminary rating for a non-Winter Classic regular-season game since 2002. The network said Sunday its regional coverage of Blackhawks-Kings and Penguins-Flyers averaged a 2.0 overnight rating. That's up 67 per cent from the average for regular-season games on NBC last year.
The abbreviated NHL season opened Saturday after a lockout wiped out the first three months.
Ratings represent the percentage of homes with televisions tuned into a program. Overnight ratings measure the country's largest markets.
Veteran journo dies
MONTREAL -- Richard Garneau, a veteran Quebec sports journalist and voice of the Montreal Canadiens, has died at age 82.
Garneau was best known for his broadcast coverage of NHL hockey and the Olympics, mostly for Radio-Canada.
He died early Sunday at Montreal's Royal Victoria hospital following complications from heart surgery.
