A's pitcher stable after being hit by line drive

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Oakland Athletics pitcher Brandon McCarthy was in stable condition in the critical care unit of a Bay Area hospital on Thursday, a day after having surgery for a skull fracture and brain contusion caused by a line drive.

McCarthy was hit in the right side of the head Wednesday by a line drive off the bat of Erick Aybar of the Los Angeles Angels. He was knocked down by the shot and hit his head on the ground.

The 29-year-old McCarthy eventually walked off the field under his own power and was taken to the hospital for further tests and observation.

A CT scan after the accident showed McCarthy had an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture. McCarthy was transferred to another hospital and had a second CT scan. He then underwent two hours of surgery Wednesday night to relieve pressure in his head.

A CT scan taken Thursday showed improvement from the previous scans and McCarthy is currently resting in the hospital.

The A's did not give a timetable for how long McCarthy will be out.

Colorado school bans six Broncos' jersey numbers

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Denver Broncos tight end Joel Dreessen says he isn't bothered by the Greeley school district's ban on his jersey number and others because they're associated with local gangs.

The district bans 13, 14 and 18 and their reverse, 31, 41 and 81. Dreessen wears 81.

The rule is three years old but made headlines this week after a third-grader wearing Peyton Manning's No. 18 was sent home to change.

Dreessen said Thursday the ban doesn't bother him if it prevents trouble.

Eighteen is in the name of the 18th Street gang, while 13 and 14 are associated with other gangs but not used in their names.

Rocket Roger not eyeing

SUGAR LAND, Texas -- Roger Clemens still insists he has no plans to pitch for the Houston Astros this season.

The 50-year-old Clemens is preparing for his second start with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League on Friday. He will pitch to his oldest son, Koby, when he starts against the Long Island Ducks.

The pair met with reporters Thursday, and the seven-time Cy Young Award winner again was questioned about the possibility of a return to the majors this season.

Clemens says he doesn't think he could make an impact for the last-place Astros this year, adding that his mind says yes but his body says no.

The Rocket tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings in his first start for the Skeeters last month. He last pitched in the majors for the New York Yankees in 2007.
