Bisons to face Dinos in bid for third place
WITH their playoff spot secured, the University of Manitoba Bisons men's football team will take a shot at third place in the Canada West conference on Saturday with their final regular-season game in Calgary.
The 4-3 Bisons meet the 6-1 Calgary Dinos at 6 p.m. (101.5 umfm.com).
Manitoba, 10th-ranked nationally and in fourth spot in the conference, can vault into third place in the conference if they can defeat the third-ranked Dinos and third-place Saskatchewan loses to UBC.
The Bisons, though, are bucking the odds this week. They've lost seven straight games to Calgary since 2007. The Dinos have won the Canada West conference four straight times.
Calgary won the season's earlier meeting, 33-12, in mid-September.
Last Saturday's 37-31 win over UBC clinched Manitoba's playoff spot, a first since 2007.
Manitoba facing battle on pitch
THE playoffs in Canada West women's soccer get underway this weekend with Manitoba visiting Langley, B.C., to face top-seeded Trinity Western on Friday.
The Bisons, 4-7-1, are in the playoffs for the first time since 2008 and will be led by top scorer Alison Kastner, who finished the season with seven points (four goals, three assists).
Trinity Western, 11-1-0, defeated Manitoba 4-0 during the regular season on September 22.
Live stats and a webcast of Friday's game (7 p.m. CT) are available at www.canadawest.tv.
The winner of Friday's quarter-final game moves to the conference semifinals.
Vestby, Sherman lead the way
A pair of multi-point nights helped forward Meagan Vestby earn the Smitty's Bison Sports female athlete of the week award.
Vestby had a goal and two assists in the Bisons 4-1 win over Mount Royal in the start of a doubleheader.
She was named first star of the game.
The Swan River native came back with a goal and an assist in the follow-up 4-3 overtime loss. The Bisons are home to Calgary Friday and Saturday this weekend.
The male athlete of the week at the U of M is Teague Sherman, Bisons football safety, who had 13 tackles and a forced fumble in last Saturday's 37-31 win over UBC.
Sherman, a fifth-year defensive specialist, is second in the conference statistics in total tackles.
Waring, Ansell star for Wesmen
SPARKING her team to a perfect 3-0 weekend at the Shoot For The Cure basketball tournament, Katie Waring is the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Pizza Hotline female player of the week.
Waring scored a team-leading 12 points and had six rebounds in the tournament opener and averaged 7.7 points and 3.6 rebounds on the weekend.
Mid-fielder Scott Ansell of the Wesmen soccer team is the school's male player of the week.
The fifth-year player was team MVP in a 3-1 victory over University of Northern British Columbia last Sunday.
He scored his third goal of the season in the team's final match of its first CIS season.
Robinson, Sass dominate
KAILAN ROBINSON of the Hamiota Huskies is the Manitoba Tri-Star Rural high school athlete of the week.
Robinson led her team to a bronze medal at the provincial rural soccer championships. The 5-8 forward was chosen player of the game for the team's semifinal win over Rivers.
The Grade 12 student is also a basketball and volleyball player while maintaining a 90 per cent average.
This week's Home Run Sports urban high school athlete of the week is St. Mary's cross-country runner Rebekah Sass. Sass was the overall individual champion at the provincial cross-country championships and led St. Mary's to a bronze in the AAAA team competition.
