Bopara urges Cook to stay on as England captain

PERTH, Australia - All rounder Ravi Bopara says Alastair Cook is still the best man to captain England and still has the full support of the dressing room.

Cook indicated after the third one-day international on Sunday, in which Australia took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series, that he would consider stepping down when he returns to England.

Cook said after eight straight losses to Australia in tests and one-day internationals that change may be necessary to revive England's performance. But Bopara said Cook remained the best man to lead England.

Bopara said "just because we've lost a couple of games, I don't think he should doubt himself," adding that "having spoken to him, he does still believe in himself. That's the most important thing."

"I would love for him to carry on and do both formats," he said. "I do believe that your best player should be your captain, and I do believe he's still our best player.

"He's the sort of guy that will go out and score hundreds for England. He'll bat through the innings, and that's the sort of guy we need.

"He's the right man for the job, and 100 per cent the other players see it the same way."
