Cabrera nears batting title

NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball appears unlikely to interfere if Melky Cabrera wins the NL batting title while serving his 50-game suspension for a positive drug test.

The San Francisco Giants outfielder began Wednesday with a league-leading .346 average, seven points ahead of Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen. Cabrera has 501 plate appearances, one fewer than the required amount if the Giants play 162 games.

Ex-Dolphin single again

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Chad Johnson's divorce from reality TV star Evelyn Lozada was finalized Wednesday, a little more than a month after his arrest on a domestic battery charge, his lawyer said.

Johnson was competing for a roster spot on the Miami Dolphins when Lozada accused him on Aug. 12 of head-butting her during an argument about condoms she found, and she filed for divorce. The Dolphins promptly cut the 34-year-old Johnson.

Turner sorry for DUI

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner apologized Wednesday to the team for his drunken-driving arrest, saying he made "a bad decision" and was prepared to deal with the consequences.

Turner was pulled over by police in suburban Gwinnett County around 5 a.m. Tuesday.
