Canada's Brown 0-2 at world junior curling event
SOCHI, Russia -- Canadian skip Corryn Brown dropped a 3-2 decision to Hannah Fleming of Scotland on Friday at the World Junior Curling Championship.
The rinks were tied at two heading into the final end at the Ice Cube Curling Center. Fleming attempted a double-takeout for the win but missed slightly, leaving rocks for each team just touching the eight-foot.
The measurement went to Scotland, which remains undefeated in the round robin while Canada fell to 0-2. Brown's team from Kamloops, B.C., opened the tournament with a 9-1 loss to Denmark.
Canada will play Russia's Alina Kovaleva today.
In men's play, Matt Dunstone's Winnipeg team had the day off after winning two games on Thursday. His rink will return to the ice this morning against Scotland's Kyle Smith.
Flacco strikes it rich
JOE FLACCO and the Baltimore Ravens reached a tentative agreement Friday on a new contract that would make the Super Bowl MVP the highest-paid player in NFL history.
If the deal is finalized, the veteran quarterback would receive in excess of $120 million over six years, according to a person close to the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract has not yet been signed.
Flacco would earn more than the $20 million average salary Drew Brees receives with the New Orleans Saints.
Flacco played out his rookie contract last season for $6.76 million and led Baltimore to the NFL championship.
Tonganator unleashed
QUEBECàCITY -- The Brandon University Bobcats unleashed the Tonganator Friday night, and he left no survivors.
Sam Tuivai, who was born in Tonga, had 28 kills and 11 digs for the Bobcats as they terminated the hopes of the Montreal Carabins winning a Canadian Interuniversity Sport men's volleyball title with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-20) win in their quarter-final at the University of Laval. Tuivai had a great match, posting a 32.1 per cent attack rate, and was rewarded with 44.8 per cent of Brandon's attacks.
