Canada's Williamson wins gold at para ski World Cup, Dueck wins bronze

SOCHI, Russia - Chris Williamson won a gold medal in slalom while Canadian teammate Josh Dueck took home a bronze Sunday at the International Paralympic Committee World Cup finals.

Toronto's Williamson, racing in the visually-impaired category with guide Robin Femy of Mont-Tremblant, Que., was last out of the gate in the first run and was in fourth place heading into the second run. He laid down an aggressive second run to secure the win with a two-run combined time of one minute 39.16 seconds.

"Winning gold always feels great," Williamson said. "I think with the (Sochi Paralympics) being only one year away, it really helps build the momentum towards 2014.

"It's nice to be on the course and to know what to expect, and know that I can control what I'm doing on the slope. It’s hopefully a good sign for next year."

Russia's Valery Redkozubov (1:39.90) finished second and Yon Santacana (1:40.63) of Spain was third.

Dueck, a sit-skier from Kimberley, B.C., was seventh after his first slalom run, and despite racing on the worst course conditions of the day during the second run, fought his way to a bronze medal finish (1:47.84).

"The second run wasn't pretty, but apparently not many other sit-skiers had great runs either," Dueck said. "It was definitely a game of attrition and I played it smart. I had good advice from the coaches on areas to be careful for. It was definitely a team effort."

Japan's Takeshi Suzuki (1:40.74) won gold while and Germany's Thomas Nolte (1:44.75) won silver.
