Canadian Brian McKeever earns gold medal at world cross-country ski event

SOLLEFTEA, Sweden - Canadians Brian McKeever and Erik Carleton captured gold medals Monday in the men's visually impaired classic sprint at the 2013 world cross-country ski championship.

McKeever, 33, and guide Carleton, both of Canmore, Alta., battled difficult conditions to capture the world title.

"It was a good ski today by Brian," Canadian team coach Robin McKeever said in a statement. "Today was all about waxing, and our techs were amazing as the conditions changed rapidly.''

Mark Arendz of Springton, P.E.I., fell in his semifinal heat of the men's standing category. That sent Canadian team officials scrambling to change McKeever’s setup in time for his race.

Sweden's Zebastian Modin claimed the silver medal ahead of Russian Oleg Ponomarev.

Arendz, 22, finished 12th in the men's standing class while Chris Klebl, of Canmore, was 13th in the sit-ski event.
