Canadian Mark McMorris takes slopestyle title at US Open snowboarding championships

VAIL, Colo. - Canada's Mark McMorris won the men's slopestyle competition in snowy conditions at the U.S. Open snowboarding championships.

McMorris, from Regina, held off Norway's Torstein Horgmo on Friday as the competition moved out west to Vail, Colo., this season after a 30-year run in Vermont. Chas Guldemond of Reno, Nev., finished third.

With the weather conditions steadily deteriorating for the women's competition, the athletes and organizers elected to cancel the event. Spencer O'Brien of Courtenay, B.C., was awarded top honours as a result of turning in the best run during the semifinals. Jamie Anderson of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., was second.

Shaun White, who skipped the slopestyle competition, will be the favourite in the men's halfpipe final on Saturday. The women's final also will be held.
