Canadian Tire gets drive off to roaring start

Raises nearly $30,000 for Xmas Cheer Board

  • Print

I'm impressed folks.

Diane Pratt, one of our editorial assistants who compiles the list of your donations each year, forwarded the first compilation of the season to me earlier this week. When I saw almost $50,000 had been donated to date, I was relieved and grateful.

Each year at the Free Press sports department we conduct the Spirit of Christmas campaign to help raise funds for the Cheer Board. Kai Madsen and his crew are facing a stiff challenge this season to avoid a significant shortfall while still dishing out approximately 19,000 hampers.

"We've got to really push hard this year," Madsen told me when I sat down with him for our seasonal chat about the campaign.

Kai knows how to inspire you while also instilling a sense of responsibility. You don't want to let the guy down.

So, I'm relieved you folks who have already sent in your donation have us off to a great start, and I'm grateful I don't have to call Kai and tell him we won't be able to help like we have been able to in the past.

Providing a jumpstart to our campaign this season are the good folks at Canadian Tire. The six stores in Winnipeg pitched in and sent us a cheque for $30,000.

Darren Rezansoff, associate dealer at the Unicity store, said Friday the Cheer Board is a charity that really provides bang for the buck.

"Doing the right thing and giving back to the community and people in need is something we are committed to," Rezansoff said. "We look at a lot of different possibilities when we sit down to allocate funds.

"With the Cheer Board, we know where our money is going. We know it's going to work. We're a big believer in what Kai Madsen and his folks down there are doing."

So, we're off to a great start folks. We've still got a few more weeks in the campaign. I hope you will help us maintain the momentum and finish strongly.

A reminder: Hamper deliveries start on Dec. 11. Drivers will be needed. To help in that area or to inquire how you can chip in to aid the Cheer Board cause, please call 204-989-5680.

Please send your donations to The Spirit of Christmas, c/o Winnipeg Free Press, 1355 Mountain Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R2X 3B6 or call the Free Press classified department at 204-697-7100 to make a credit card donation.
