Carey top of pool in Masters slam event
BRANTFORD, Ont. -- Rachel Homan and Brad Jacobs are still perfect at the Rogers Masters Grand Slam of Curling.
Ottawa's Homan improved to 5-0 on Friday after beating Calgary's Shannon Kleibrink 7-2 and Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater, Ont., 6-2 in the early draw.
Jacobs meanwhile continues to top the men's round-robin. The Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., rink moved to 5-0 after beating Toronto's Mark Kean 7-2 in their lone draw of the day.
Switzerland's Silvana Tirinzoni and Winnipeg's Chelsea Carey also moved atop their pools in women's play. Tirinzoni (4-1) went into first after defeating Winnipeg's Kaitlyn Lawes 7-4.
In the late draw, Carey cruised past Kelly Scott of Kelowna, B.C., 8-2 to improve to 4-1.
The day was a setback for Lawes, who entered day 3-0 but lost both of her matches starting with a 7-3 setback to Calgary's Crystal Webster.
Lawes is heading Jones's team after the world champion gave birth to a baby girl on Tuesday.
On the men's side, Calgary's Kevin Koe defeated Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont., 4-3 in the only match of the late draw.
The win lifted Koe atop his pool at 4-1. Edmonton's Kevin Martin (4-1) has the lead in his pool after hammering Denmark's Rasmus Stjerne 7-2.
Jaffs, Burmi score
ST. JOHN'S, N.L. -- Jason Jaffray and Alex Burmistrov scored in the shootout as the St. John's IceCaps defeated the Albany Devils 4-3 in American Hockey League action Friday.
Raymond Sawada, Carl Klingberg and Zach Redmond had goals in regulation for St. John's (6-7-0).
'Skating for Sandy'
NEW YORK -- Centre Brad Richards and several of his New York Rangers teammates participated in a benefit skate Friday to help in the relief efforts on Staten Island after Superstorm Sandy.
Richards, who signed with the Rangers last off-season, and led them to the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference last post-season, partnered with a high school team to organize "Skating for Sandy."
Defencemen Steve Eminger, Dan Girardi, Anton Stralman and Marc Staal as well as forwards Carl Hagelin, Brian Boyle, Ryan Callahan, Jeff Halpern, Taylor Pyatt and Marian Gaborik joined Richards at the Staten Island Skating Pavilion for two afternoon sessions with area children.
"Being part of the community makes you a part of everyday life," Richards said.
Steve Rose, a community affairs officer, estimated the event raised between $10,000-$12,000.
