Edmonton Oilers threaten they might move to Seattle
EDMONTON -- With plans for a new arena in doubt, the Edmonton Oilers say they are considering a move to Seattle.
Oilers owner Daryl Katz, team president Patrick LaForge and Kevin Lowe, president of hockey operations, are in Seattle for meetings about a possible relocation to the city.
The Oilers said in a statement that while they hope to reach a deal with Edmonton on a new arena, the team is also listening to proposals from a number of potential NHL markets.
Seattle City Council approved hedge-fund manager Chris Hansen's plan for a US$490-million arena Monday that both sides hope will host an NBA and NHL team in the future.
The Oilers and the City of Edmonton had agreed on plans for a proposed $475-million cost-shared arena that would begin construction early next year.
But the arena and the Oilers' future in the city were thrown into doubt earlier this month when the team told councillors it wanted millions of dollars in new concessions from taxpayers.

Froese, Bustos get nod
SOCCER players Kianz Froese and Marco Bustos of Winnipeg have been selected to Canada's national male youth under-17 team for the eight-team 2012 AGS Cup tournament in Spain beginning on Thursday and ending on Oct. 13.
The international event will give national team coaches an opportunity to evaluate players for the 2013 U17 CONCACAF zone qualification April 6-19, 2013 in Panama and for the FIFA U17 World Cup in United Arab Emirates Oct. 17- Nov. 8, 2013.
The U17 national team will train and play first-round matches against Morocco, Mexico and Russia. The other teams are Azerbaijan, Georgia, United Arab Emirates and the USA.
"It is great to see both Marco and Kianz continuing their development together with the national team. Both have progressed from our system to the Vancouver Whitecaps Academy and Kianz has made Whitecaps reserve team appearances," said Rob Gale, the Manitoba Soccer Association's technical director and national under-18 men's team coach.
Alain appointed coach
CALGARY -- Pierre Alain has been named head coach of Canada's national women's under-22/development hockey team for the 2012-13 season.
Alain, 50, previously won a gold medal as head coach of the under-18 women's team at the IIHF Women's World Championship in January.
He started as a video coach with the women's program in 2007 and later served as an assistant coach for the under-22 and under-18 squads.
Alain will be joined by assistant coaches Tim Bothwell and Cassandra Turner.
