Goldeyes announce interleague slate
THE defending American Association champion Winnipeg Goldeyes baseball team will host the Can-Am League's Les Capitales de Québec and the expansion Les Aigles de Trois-Riviéres during the 2013 season.
Details of interleague play between the AA and Can-Am League were announced on Wednesday. The Goldeyes will play five interleague series against Can-Am League opponents in the 2013 season with the Goldeyes hosting the two teams, both based in Quebec, at Shaw Park for five games. The Goldeyes will host Les Capitales on June 14-16, 2013 and Les Aigles on July 26-29.
Interleague play between the American Association and Can-Am League started last season. The Goldeyes hosted Québec in the team's only interleague series in 2012.
The Goldeyes also announced their seven-game exhibition schedule. Winnipeg will host the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Shaw Park on May 6-7 and the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on May 10. The Goldeyes will then travel to Fargo for games on May 11 and 12 before heading to Kansas City to face the T-Bones on May 14 and the Wingnuts in Wichita on May 15.
The Goldeyes' 2013 training camp opens May 4 at Shaw Park.
Pistons duo shaving for charity
CAPTAIN Kyle Rous and goaltender Zach Rakochy of the Steinbach Pistons are "baldy going where fundraisers have gone before."
The two players will have adopted that slogan and will lose their locks, six inches to be shaved from each head, on Friday after their Manitoba Junior Hockey League game in the lobby of Steinbach's T.G. Smith Centre.
They looked into donating the hair for wigs for cancer patients but it didn't meet the eight-inch length requirement.
"We both had long hair and we decided to take it once step further and shave it off for some very good causes," said Rous. "I will be raising funds for prostate cancer research and Zach will be raising money for mental illness. This simple act has the power to make a meaningful contribution to the lives of those with cancer or mental illness."
Rous, 19, has so far raised $600 and Rakochy, 19, has raised $400. Donations will be collected right up until shaving time after the game against the Winnipeg Blues.
The individuals who make the two largest donation will be invited to assist in shaving the players' heads.
