Goldeyes move Day, VanLeur, Bodishbaugh

THE Winnipeg Goldeyes, just 12 days after winning the 2012 American Association championship, has traded three players.

Manager Rick Forney announced Tuesday that he traded outfielder/catcher Kyle Day and pitchers Jack VanLeur and Chris Bodishbaugh.

Day was traded to the Gary SouthShore RailCats as the player to be named later in the Aug. 6 deal, along with pitcher Dexter Carter, that brought outfielder Mike Coles and pitcher Chris Allen to the Goldeyes.

Pitchers VanLeur and Bodishbaugh were essentially loaned to the Goldeyes for their playoff runs as the two pitchers were returned to their clubs.

Left-handed pitcher VanLeur was traded back to the Sioux Falls Pheasants as one of the two players to be named later in the same deal that brough him to Winnipeg on Aug. 14.

Bodishbaugh, a right-handed pitcher, was moved back to the Sioux City Explorers as the player to be named later in the trade that brought him to on Aug. 15 to Winnipeg.

The American Association teams have until Nov. 10 to exercise their option on player contracts for the 2013 season.

Kliewer, Clayton star

WESTGATE Wings left-side hitter Joel Kliewer is this week's Home Run Sports urban high school athlete of the week.

The Wings captain recently led his school to an 8-0 record and championship at the University of Saskatchewan tournament. Kliewer led the team with 54 kills and 20 service aces en route to being named MVP of the tourney.

The Tri-Star rural athlete of the week is Brandi Clayton of the Nellie McClung Stingers golf team in Manitou.

Clayton led the Stingers to their 9th consecutive Zone 6 golf championship with a round of 92, a score that gave her a fourth straight individual title. Clayton then followed that up with a 95 at the Provincial Championship in Minnedosa to help McClung to its second provincial title in the last three years.

Mulder, Demski shine

THE University of Manitoba announced its Smitty's Bison Sports stars for the week ending Sept. 23rd and the athletes come from the volleyball court and the football field.

The female athlete of the week is right side hitter Crystal Mulder of the Bison women's volleyball team. Mulder, who is in her second year, was outstanding as Manitoba went 4-1 to win the Regina Women's Volleyball Invitational. Mulder had 40 total kills while playing four of the five matches.

The Bison are next in action this weekend at the U of Winnipeg Lea Marc non-conference tournament.

Demski, meanwhile, continued to impress in helping the Bisons knock off the Alberta Golden Bears last Saturday. The second-year running back/receiver/returner accounted for 128 punt return yards, two kickoff returns for 42 yards, added a 31-yard receiving TD and 31 yards along the ground, including a 20-yard score.

Demski is now third in Canada West with five touchdowns. Manitoba (3-1) is on the road for a second-place showdown in Canada West as they play the Regina Rams (3-1) Friday night.

No. 2 with a bullet

THE Canada West pre-season hockey coaches' poll has been released with the U of M Bisons ranked second behind Saskatchewan.

The Bisons also announced their team captains for the 2012-13 season: Dane Crowley is the captain after spending the last two seasons as an alternate. The Bison alternates are Tyler Dittmer, Blair Macaulay and Matthew Lowry.

Manitoba opens its season this Friday in Alberta against the Golden Bears.
