Heavy rain delays start on final day of 2nd test, with New Zealand 162-2 vs England
WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Rain delayed the start of play on the final day of the second cricket test between New Zealand and England on Monday, pushing the match and series further towards stalemate.
New Zealand was due to resume at 162-2 in its second innings, still 49 runs behind England after following on. Only 35 overs were bowled on the fourth day, all but washing away England's chance of taking a 1-0 series lead into the final test at Auckland which starts Friday. The first test was drawn.
There was frustration for England and also a deep irony that rain had so suddenly come to New Zealand's rescue. All of Wellington's North Island is in drought and parts of Wellington are in the grip of their worst dry spell since 1919.
The drought broke just as England sought to build on its 211-run first innings lead.
