Historic Manitoba showing at international skiing event

AT the Whistler Cup in Whistler, B.C, Tori Hislop of Winnipeg raced with one pole but still placed 14th in the Kombi race. Provincial coach Bob Lawrie said it was the highest international result for a Manitoba youth ski racer.

"I'm pretty happy to have gotten in the top 15 but I know I could have finished a bit better if I hadn't dropped my pole," Hislop, 13, said in a telephone interview from Whistler.

Kombi is a race that features a combination of big turns and tight turns, which was held at the site of the 2010 Olympic Games. "I was trying to grab it, then I was trying to shake it off (it was still attached to her wrist by the pole strap) but I couldn't so it was just dangling in the air."

She said she hit a gate in the slalom section of the course and the pole popped out of her hand.

"It was very impressive for her to not only finish so high but for focusing and getting through it," said Lawrie, who brought seven athletes to the event. "That finish is huge for Tori and we're really proud of her."

Gage Martinook, 13, of Brandon placed 26th in the boys' slalom on Sunday.

The event, which brought together the top 11-14-year-old ski racers, included athletes from 31 nations and is known as the starting ground for future Olympians.
