I'll Have Another up for top horse honours
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. -- Breeders' Cup Classic winner Fort Larned, Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I'll Have Another and BC Mile winner Wise Dan are finalists for Horse of the Year at the Eclipse Awards.
I'll Have Another, Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags and Derby and Belmont runner-up Bodemeister are finalists for 3-year-old champion male honours.
The 42nd annual awards will be presented Jan. 19 at Gulfstream Park.
Rangers, Berkman close
DALLAS -- A person familiar with the situation says the Texas Rangers are close to a deal with Lance Berkman to be their designated hitter.
Berkman's deal is pending a physical, according to the source.
Multiple reports, all citing unidentified sources, said it would be a one-year deal worth at least $10 million. The deal could also include a vesting option for 2014.
Mourinho party-pooper
MADRID, Spain -- Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho says he won't be attending the FIFA gala on Monday where he is a finalist for the coach of the year award.
The Portuguese manager said on Saturday that "I am not going. I have to work. I have an important Copa del Rey game on Wednesday, and I won't attend (the gala)."
The other finalists for this year's award are Spain national coach Vicente del Bosque and former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.
Canada going for gold
FUSSEN, Germany -- Canada's under-22 women's hockey team will play for gold at the Meco Cup
Sarah Lefort and Jenelle Kohanchuk scored second-period goals Saturday as Canada defeated Finland 2-0.
The Canadians will play Russia for gold on Sunday, a year after they had to settle for bronze.
"We were very happy, our team, very happy to be part of the final, and we'll be ready for (Sunday's) game," said Canadian coach Pierre Alain.
