Potter comes up big for Canada

AMSTERDAM -- Emily Potter of Winnipeg played a key role in Canada's medal-winning effort at the recent World Cadet (under-17) Basketball Championships.

On Sunday, the 6-5 post from Glenlawn Collegiate scored a team-high 17 points and hauled down 11 rebounds as Canada beat Japan 84-77 in the bronze-medal game.

It was the first time Canada has medalled in a women's world championship age group event.

Potter had 13 points and six rebounds in Canada's 84-59 semifinal loss to the United States.

Potter finished second among Canadians with 6.4 rebounds per game in the tournament. Her eight-point scoring average was also second on the squad.

Silver for Guttormson, Lowry

DARTMOUTH, N.S. -- Winnipeg's Hannah Guttormson and Stephanie Lowry teamed up to earn a silver medal in the midget women's C2 1,000-metre race at the Canadian Canoe/Kayak Championships on Saturday.

A day earlier, Guttormson claimed a bronze medal in the midget women's C1 six-kilometre race.

Glendale council extends arena deal with NHL

PHOENIX -- The Glendale City Council has directed staff to extend its arena management agreement with the NHL for another month.

City Attorney Craig Tindall says it'll allow potential Phoenix Coyotes owner Greg Jamison more time to try to buy the team.

The Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/NSCt0S) reports Glendale's third 30-day arena management agreement with the NHL was set to expire later this week.

Monday's extension came nearly four months after the city council approved a 20-year, $324 million deal with Jamison, a former San Jose Sharks executive who is trying to buy the team.

Glendale has twice pledged $25 million to the league to operate the arena and keep the team in Glendale.

The NHL has operated the Coyotes since former owner Jerry Moyes took the team into bankruptcy in 2009.

Big Pappy doesn't want Sox career to end on DL

BOSTON -- David Ortiz doesn't want his season -- and possibly his Red Sox career -- to end on the disabled list.

The Red Sox placed Ortiz back on the 15-day disabled list Monday due to lingering problems with a strained right Achilles, but the DH said he hopes to play again this season.

Speaking to reporters in Boston's dugout about 45 minutes before the club's game against Kansas City, Ortiz expressed his desire to return this season -- and beyond.

The 36-year old Ortiz said he'll have an injection in the next day or so and hopes to return in September. He will become a free agent at the end of the season.

"We'll see how it goes the next couple of weeks," he said. "If I feel good I can go out and play. ... Oh man, no question (I want that)."
