Austria's Fenninger nearly flawless

SEMMERING, Austria -- Anna Fenninger of Austria had two near-perfect runs to win a women's World Cup giant slalom on Friday, while second-place Tina Maze of Slovenia extended her lead in the overall standings.

In difficult conditions because of snowfall, Fenninger posted the fastest time in both runs on the Panorama course and finished in a combined time of 2 minutes, 13.09 seconds to beat Maze by 1.10. Tessa Worley of France, who was second after the opening run, came 1.18 back in third.

It was Fenninger's second World Cup victory after also winning a GS on home soil -- in Lienz -- a year ago to the day.

Marie-Michele Gagnon of Lac-Etchemin, Que., was the top Canadian, finishing 14th with a time of 2:16.48.

Obama too busy to bust Fergie's chops

LONDON -- Facing criticism once again from media and fellow Premier League managers, Alex Ferguson was half-expecting a reaction from the President of the United States, too.

The volatile Manchester United manager hasn't been short of influential critics following his latest outburst at a referee.

This time, he wouldn't have been surprised if it had even reached the ears of the White House.

"The press have had a field day out of it," Ferguson said of the discussion about his behaviour. "They have addressed every possible avenue. The only one they have left out is Barack Obama. He is too busy."

It's hardly comparable to the "fiscal cliff" deadline currently occupying President Obama, but the Premier League's main talking point over the festive period has been the outspokenness of English football's longest-serving manager.

Days after claiming one of his players could have been "killed" by an opponent, the 70-year-old Ferguson delivered another rant Friday while defending himself for approaching match officials during a league match against Newcastle.

Grumbling guts sideline Nadal for Oz

MADRID, Spain -- Rafael Nadal will miss next month's Australian Open because of a stomach virus, further delaying his comeback after being sidelined since June with a knee injury.

The 26-year-old Spaniard said Friday he has been forced to withdraw from the Grand Slam event from Jan. 14-27 and the preceding Qatar Open at Doha.

The same virus kept him from making his return at Abu Dhabi this week.
